Here are some essential tips to ensure a bright and merry season, free of electrical hazards:
Lighten Up on the Load:
- Check the wattage: Every circuit has a maximum wattage it can handle. Don’t overload outlets by plugging in too many strands of lights. Check the wattage rating on lights and extension cords, and ensure they don’t exceed the circuit’s capacity (usually listed on the breaker box).
- Spread the cheer: Distribute your lights across multiple circuits to avoid overloading any single outlet.
- Less is more: Consider using energy-efficient LED lights, which use less power and generate less heat, reducing the risk of electrical issues.
Inspect Before You Connect:
- Unravel the mystery: Inspect your lights for any damage before stringing them up. Look for frayed wires, cracked bulbs, or loose connections – anything that could pose a fire hazard. Discard any damaged lights immediately.
