Don’t panic! Before you start yanking plugs, the experts at North Pole Holiday Lighting have put together this essential guide to help you safely diagnose and fix your display.
Safety First!
Step 1: Unplug Everything. Do not touch any wires or plugs until you are certain the power is off. If the lights are plugged into an outdoor socket, flip the corresponding breaker in your service panel to the “off” position.
Step 2: Check the GFI. Most outdoor outlets should be protected by a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI). This safety device is designed to trip when it detects water or a short. Check all GFIs used for your lights and press the RESET button. If it immediately trips again, a serious fault remains.
Step 3: Wait it Out. Water is the problem. Before attempting a fix, allow time for the lights, plugs, and extension cord connections to dry completely. This might take several hours, especially if they are inside a connection box or pooling on the ground.
Troubleshoot & Repair
Inspect Connections: Carefully check every single connection point, including where the lights plug into the extension cord, and where the two strings connect. This is where water is most likely to seep in.
Look for Damage: Are any wires frayed? Are there cracked bulbs? If you find a string with clear damage, remove it completely from the circuit. It’s better to replace a bad string than risk further issues.
